[TECH FIRST IMPRESSION] Playstation 4 PRO
Playstation 4 or PS4 is Sony’s current generation gaming console first released last 2013. It is quite a successful gaming device and is currently leading the console race. Based from Sony’s history, they usually release a slim build of the console during its mid-cycle. However, what was unexpected was Sony releasing both the PS4 Slim and the PS4 PRO late last year (2016).
So, what’s the difference between the launch, slim and PRO models of the popular PS4? What type of gamer needs which version?
To make things short, the slim model has the same specs as the standard or launch PS4 except for the optical output port (for amplifiers and hifi equipments) while the PRO model has an upgraded GPU and a higher CPU clock rate and is marketed for 4K gaming. If you don’t have a 4K TV or monitor, you’ll still benefit from the upgraded specs since a number of games have already been patched and to improve its graphics and frame rate. There is also the added feature of Boost Mode which can improve performance of games unpatched by their developers.
If you are a seasoned PS4 player that is looking for the best possible experience with or without a 4K monitor, then you must get the PS4 PRO. If you are new to the console scene and just want to try and dip his/her toe into the world of console gaming, it would be safe to get the Slim. I don’t recommend getting the standard or launch PS4 if the 2 new models are available at your location.
The new PS4 pro uses physical buttons for the power and eject like the later versions of the standard model. I believe this is sturdier than the original sensory type which had a number of malfunctions after a few years of use.
All ports from the original standard or launch PS4 is included in the PRO model so you won’t be missing any features such as optical output for your Astro Headsets.
The PS4 PRO Hard disc drive (HDD) is still consumer friendly. Like the launch PS4 model, anyone with a set of common tools can open the drive bay and replace the HDD on their own. You just search the instructions online and you’ll be done in no time. This model comes with a 1 TB HDD.
If you compare the PRO model with the launch or standard PS4, you’ll see that the PRO is bigger and thicker (heavier as well). Nothing very significant though.
The PS4’s graphics are great to start with. On a standard 1080p (or full HD) monitor, I personally can’t tell any graphical difference unless I play the same game on both the standard and the PRO side by side. It is, however, the frame rate benefit in some (older) games that will make you glad you got the PRO model.
Overall, the PS4 PRO is a great addition to Sony’s current generation console lineup. It solves some of the previous frame rate problems that plagued the launch/standard model. In terms of graphics though, you won’t be missing much if you don’t have a 4K monitor. If you’re new, you are better off with the slim model and use the extra cash to buy some games.
